122 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.14 STUDIO SHOT Photos by Aaron Kingsbury Ann Dawkins paints in the liv- ing room of her second-foor apartment, in a white-columned house off Frankfort Avenue. A worn-down couch slumps in the center of the room, canvases littering the walls behind and beside it. Above the TV hangs a colorful painting of a woman encompassed in lace, one of the main pieces from Dawkins' recent series about how society perceives women. "I was trying to create something that was appealing to look at but at the same time was a little bit repul- sive," says Dawkins, who has a B.F.A. from U of L and turns 25 this month. The bespec- tacled and brunette Louisville native based the paintings on Photoshop-manipulated images she took of her lace-wrapped friends. The work was on display at U of L, the Spot5 Art Center on Frankfort and down- town's Public Gallery. An easel standing behind the couch holds the frst painting in a new series. The inspiration this time? Women covered in fungi. Dawkins recently took leftover condiments from her waitressing job at BoomBozz Pizza, smeared herself with the various sauces and had a friend take pictures. During this interview, Dawkins mentions how she's ready to relocate her studio from the living room to an extra bedroom her roommate just vacated. "'Cause there's a lot of distrac- tions, it's been diffcult to, like, force myself to work," Dawkins says. "It's basically just getting up in the morning and sched- uling studio time. Like, 'From 1 to 5 I'm going to paint, and I can't reschedule on myself again!' You have to just make it a priority." —Emily Markanich Ann Dawkins Painter
