Garnish with frozen grapes. Matthew Landan, 43, owner of Haymarket Whiskey Bar (331 E. Market St.), created this cocktail inspired by the Southern Exposition, which began in what is now Old Louisville on Aug. 1, 1883, and lasted until 1887. President Chester A. Arthur was at the opening. The innovation on display at the exposition, which led to an explosion of industry, served as Landan's inspiration for the drink. "I wanted bourbon in there, but I wanted to offset it with something lighter, something more reminiscent of Italianate architecture, something unexpected and refned — sweet but not cloying," he says. — Sara Price
