LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.14 85 Despite chronic arthritic pain, shoulder replacements have long been out of reach for a substantial segment of the population who had a detached rotator cuf or damage to surrounding shoulder muscles. Tose folks, many of them elderly, sufered painful grinding, loss of motion and decreased strength. Te recent development of reverse total shoulder replacement has dramatically increased the number of patients Floyd Memorial Joint Replacement Center board-certifed orthopedic surgeon and sports-medicine physician Kris Abeln, M.D., is able to successfully treat. After losing the ability to lift their arms over their head, enjoy the sports they loved and perform even basic house work, many of Abeln's patients had previously been told they were not candidates for surgery since their rotator cuf wasn't functional. In reverse shoulder replacement surgery, the socket and metal ball are switched. Te metal ball is fxed to the socket and the plastic cup is fxed to the upper end of the humerus bone. Te reverse method works for patients with a detached rotator cuf because the implant relies on diferent muscles to position and move the arm. Tis procedure is also recommended for patients who've had previous, unsuccessful shoulder replacement. Dr. Abeln has many success stories, including a gentleman who'd been told he couldn't have shoulder replacement due to a non-functioning rotator cuf. Te patient could no longer use his arm, was in tremendous pain and had endured a series of injections. Six weeks after his Floyd Memorial Joint Replacement Center returning patients to active, pain-free lives with total shoulder and reverse total shoulder replacements surgery, he was no longer in pain, could get dressed by himself and had fnished physical therapy. Dr. Abeln is delighted that with these options available, patients with arthritis in their shoulders are able to return to active, pain-free lives, much the same way hip and knee pain suferers have found relief through joint replacement.
