On an unseasonably warm spring Saturday, for example, they've welcomed a 20-something couple from La- fayette, Ind., who are in town on a weekend getaway for the husband's birthday. After having the house on a quiet street near U of L all to themselves for six years, the Mill- ers, both 31, started renting out their guest bedroom through a website called Airbnb. People all over the world list their houses (or castles or tree houses) on the site. In Louis- ville, travelers can choose from 211 listings. Most of Louisville's Airbnb oferings are con- centrated in the Highlands, Old Louisville and NuLu. Smaller spaces like the Millers' spare bedroom with a shared bath typically rent for $50 to $80 a night. Te Millers decided to list their house on Airbnb after they had good experiences stay- ing in spare rooms in Montreal and Chicago through the site. "When we visited Montreal," Kristen says, "we stayed with this great girl named Amelie, and she pointed out a couple streets that she thought we'd fnd interesting. We spent our whole trip taking her sugges- tions. It was an amazing time and we never would have encountered all that by ourselves." Te Millers say they've never had any trouble with guests. And they've had a lot of them. "We had this older couple who was here for the Farm Machinery Show," Mark says. "Ten we had this lady who was an artist who sold, we can only guess, like $13,000 worth of stuf at the St. James Court Art Show in one day. We've had people who are trying to fnd where they want to live. We had a girl who was 21 or something and she was living in Chicago and trying to fnd something cheaper. Ten we had a guy who drove his motorcycle from Albuquerque, N.M., because he'd inter- acted with some girl online and he came here to meet her. It didn't work out." Besides encountering new people, the Mill- ers enjoy having the extra income, which they say is the equivalent of a part-time job. "We both work at nonprofts, so we don't make a lot of money," Kristen says. Because renting out the frst bedroom has been such a posi- tive experience, they're thinking of opening a second bedroom, currently used as an ofce, to more guests. +0.57 +20.46 +3.05 +19.71 +3.05 +10.93 +0.89 +13.70 +6.10 +14.30 0 +8.45 38-49 Real Estate.indd 49 4/17/14 4:04 PM
