5.14 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 1 0 5 Neighborhood Playlist Upcoming show Some 40 years ago, Madison Cawein found him- self staring at a river in Atlanta, a small patch of sky refected in the water. "It was a transformative experience," the 63-year-old artist says. "I got the idea that any small piece of the material world can give you a view of the whole of creation." Cawein, who now lives in Santa Fe, N.M., called Louisville home on and off for nearly 30 years. (His great-grandfather, also named Madison, was a well-known poet from here.) For his show May 23 to June 28 at B. Deemer Gallery (2650 Frankfort Ave.), Cawein photographed fowers foating in water, using the images as the basis for his nine realistic oil paintings of orchids, roses and a spider mum. "There are an infnite number of ways to photograph a fower," he says. "The world changes, the light changes, the color changes. You are trying to do the impossible, trying to fx time even as it is changing." He adds that the fower paintings are lenses into the universe's intricate workings, that the water, bubbles and refections are "a landscape of life." — Maliha Ikram www.komenlouisville.org www.ypal.org/connect "Peter Gunn Theme," Henry Mancini "It makes driving around in traffc way more fun." "The Middle," Jimmy Eat World "This has been on my treadmill rotation at the gym a lot lately." "There Ain't No Good Chain Gang," The Highwaymen "One of the best country songs of all time."
