6 8 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 4.14 This is an advertisement Arguably, one of the most recognizable faces in the legal community, Jim Ellis began his legal career in Louisville 29 years ago. Since the beginning, Ellis has taken pride in teaming up with people at the top of their game. As an undergraduate student athlete, he achieved success in the classroom and on the basketball court at the University of Louisville. After earning a law degree from Chase College of Law in Northern Kentucky, Ellis began his career consulting and legally advising professional athletes as well as representing other high profle individuals — police chiefs, governors, news anchors, reporters and entertainers to name a few. My dad read the newspaper every day when I was younger — still does. In 1999 he brought home the sports section and a blaze-faced longshot named Charismatic galloped straight into my heart. I was a 13-year-old goner when that long-striding chestnut won the Derby by a neck. I decided that some day I wanted to go to the Derby; I wanted to tell its great stories forever. Because that's what this race is all about — the stories. Horses come from nowhere on silver trailers driven by crutch-walking cowboys. Trainer Bob Bafert swaggers back every season with his California speedballs and his California cool. Titans of industry sometimes get their due, sometimes buckle to blue-collar invaders. I've covered horse racing for nine years, and now my team at The Blood-Horse is ready to release our second longform multimedia presentation online — words, pictures, video. On April 23, we'll publish the story of one of Louisville's adopted sons: retired Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day, whose statue overlooks the Churchill paddock. Before Day won the Derby in 1992 aboard Lil E. Tee, he traveled a long and perilous road through drug and alcohol abuse as he si- multaneously rose to stardom. The longform genre lends itself perfectly to horse racing. Oh, and I just remembered. The horse Charismatic edged for victory in Kentucky Derby 125? That was Menifee, with Pat Day in the irons. — Claire Novak, online features editor, The Blood-Horse 81 TIP 82 TIP Stinks. What? THERE'S NOT GOING TO BE A TRIPLE CROWN WINNER THIS YEAR. 64-81.indd 68 3/19/14 5:26 PM
