3 2 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 4.14 28 TIP Derby Week's the perfect time to run procrastinated errands at the DMV, county clerk's ofce and courthouse. It's a ghost town 'round those parts. But double-check hours. Because even the government likes to shut down early for the Pegasus Parade, Oaks, etc. The Barnstable Brown Gala on Derby Eve is a snap to sneak into. We won't tell you the exact location of the Highlands mansion, nor will we disclose the foolproof way to glide in undetected. But here are a few hints: Back entrance. Gown or tux. Walk in like you own the place. Or just dress like a member of the catering crew. 32 TIP 33 TIP At least one time during Derby Week, throw your hands up, look to the heavens and shout, "It's Derby, y'all!" as loud as you can. You'll never feel more in tune with Kentucky. Photo by Ted Tarquinio If you successfully infltrate Barnstable Brown, get a photo with a celebrity — yeah, with that woman whose name you can't recall from that one reality show. 31 TIP Charo? Sure, it takes some guts, but introduce yourself to a stranger. Ofer up a kind gesture. Like this man lending a damp woman his hand towel. She, in return, admires his bold choice of footwear. Friends for life! One too many Oaks "Lily" cocktails and you may endure the red-stained upper lip most ofen associated with Kool-Aid overindulgence. TIP 30 TIP 29 26-43.indd 32 3/19/14 5:18 PM
