1 2 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 4.14 IF AT CHURCHILL DOWNS ON OAKS OR DERBY, DO NOT EXPECT TO GET ANYWHERE FAST. TAKE YOUR TIME. PEOPLE-WATCH. 3 TIP HOOK 'EM WHILE THEY'RE YOUNG. 2 TIP Photo by Ted Tarquinio Photo by Mickie Winters 4 TIP 5 TIP Tune to local news dur- ing Derby Week. Odds are good that you'll catch a tipsy reporter or anchor slurring words from a Derby party or Churchill Downs. 6 TIP SEE AN ACTUAL HORSE. We've spent several infeld Derbies watching big-screen television. Didn't see so much as a mane. Come to think, we didn't even see the dirt of the track. It doesn't have to be that way for us general-admission warriors. That infeld buy will get you into the paddock, too, where actual horses are saddled. Do this: Plan a trip to the paddock early in the day. If you make your way there just before the running of a race, chances are good you'll fnd a spot close enough to see a horse being saddled for the next race. You kinda should. It is Derby, afer all. TWINSPIRES.COM. BET EARLY, BET OFTEN, BET FROM HOME. Yeah, there's something fun about holding a beting slip, but there's nothing fun about standing in line for up to an hour to shovel your wadded-up $2 to a mutuel clerk. Not when you could have made all your bets before heading to the track. Plus, you don't run the risk of losing a ticket. Like that guy who lost a Superfecta slip worth six fgures on the Giacomo Derby. Remember that poor soul? That was us. If found, please send that winning ticket or proceeds to: Louisville Magazine, 137 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd., Suite 101, 40202. Thanks! 10-25.indd 12 3/19/14 5:16 PM
