3.14 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 1 7 WE L OVE Louisville Magazine Vol. 15/No. 3 March 1964 On the cover: Nice picture of a jockey. But wait: This isn't the Derby issue. A second glance reveals that our cover features not a jockey but a golf kit colored with psychedelic blue-greens. Call it abstract art, open to interpretation. It is the '60s, right? Inside: Sticking with the groovy vibe of the times, we detail the way Jefferson County embraced Mother Nature in "How a Shoestring Stretched into a Rainbow." (Notice how the shape of our parks, when viewed on a map, resembles the arch-like curvature of a rainbow.) Kewl! But back to business: We also examine the prosperous Farm Credit Banks and gape in awe at a 10-story offce building erected on a 52-acre tract at Newburg Road and the Watterson Expressway. Outside: Louisville's most famous anything, Cassius Clay, joins the Nation of Islam and changes his name to Muhammad Ali. Some band from across the pond called the Beatles produces a No. 1 single. (Remember singles?) And President Johnson declares a "war on poverty." A half-century later, we're still talking about Ali, listening to the Beatles and, unfortunately, fghting that war on poverty. www.afusa.com We like coffee. We really like free coffee. And we love the FREE COFFEE! at Lotsa Pasta, in St. Matthews. The FREE COFFEE! is available from 8 to 10 every morning except Sunday. This isn't your waiting-room FREE COFFEE!, either. It's the good stuff. Reflls are free, too. Sweet heaven. Owner John Hale started with the FREE COFFEE! three years ago as a nod to Black History Month. He's done it ever since. There are regulars, but so far nobody is taking undue advantage. "If you drink the coffee here all morning, we're not going to give you the stink eye," Scott the barista tells us. "But if you do it for a week solid, we may ask you to buy something." We recommend the "everything" muffn. Pairs well with … FREE COFFEE! FLASH BACK 12-25 BIT.indd 17 2/20/14 10:30 AM
