Puts me in such a good mood." "Down In the Valley," The Head and the Heart "It's one of those songs that you want to scream at the top of your lungs with the windows down in your car." "Truly Madly Deeply," Savage Garden "This was my favorite when I was a kid." "Maneater," Nelly Furtado "The song is so strong, with a sense of power for women." "One Week," Barenaked Ladies "This is the song for my mom and me. One time, I printed off the lyrics so we could see who could sing along the fastest." — Sara Price ? one QUESTION Local rock band Wax Fang released its new album, the 2001: A Space Odyssey-inspired "space-rock opera" The Astronaut, on Jan. 28th. Frontman Scott Carney, who has a theatrical voice, says his interest in music began when he was young. (When asked how old he is, he replies, "Age…is just a number.") "I started playing the guitar when I was 12, but I've been singing for as long as I can remember," Carney says, adding that his frst public performance, during his sophomore year in high school, was at a place called the Louisville Pizza Co. in Hikes Point. He went on to study flmmaking at a trade school in Pittsburgh. "As far as music is concerned," Carney says, "I'm a bit of an autodidact." How do you create those spacey sounds? "I've always been drawn to reverb, echo, delay and other spatial effects when making music, and I used them in good measure on this album to help convey the feeling of hopelessly drifting in space. Synthesizers certainly help conjure up feelings of space — and of technology and the future as well," Carney says. — SP www.wfpk.org 2.14 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 91
