Jim Oxyer Oxyer and Pastor Laura Meier at Calvary Evangelical. Music director, organist Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church 1838 Bardstown Road About Oxyer: "I started piano lessons at age fve, was hired as organist at a new church in my hometown (Burlington, Wash.) at age 16 and was an organ-performance minor at Whitworth University in Spokane." About the organ: "This organ is a wonderful supportive friend. The physical location of the console and pipes at the back of the sanctuary reinforce the idea that it is not ʻstealing the show' or trying to be the star. I don't think of it as a solo instrument, although easily it could be. Many church organs feature syrupy stops and/or clusters of string stops. This instrument has clear, solid, coherent sonority. This organ wants to challenge a congregation to sing better." McFarland at St. Paul. Holiday concert schedule: Christmas concert and sing-along, 3 p.m., Dec. 8. Jim McFarland Director of music ministries St. Paul United Methodist Church 2000 Douglass Blvd. About McFarland: "I frst started playing the organ because I was asked to play for a high school baccalaureate service." About the organ: "Though I haven't been playing this organ long, it has the feel of coming home to a comfortable place. The action is supple and smooth, and the response is always reliable. The instrument's temperament is unique and is tuned to a system developed by a theorist named (Francesco Antonio) Vallotti. Unlike our modern 'equal' temperament, the Vallotti temperament allows for some of the keys to sound quite exotic, yet allowing the whole organ and all the stops to sound well together no matter what key I play in. It is visually stunning and has a range of sound and color combinations that make it possible to play music from any era with confdence." Holiday concert schedule: Advent lessons and carols, 9 and 11 a.m., Dec. 15; candlelight and Communion services, 5 and 10 p.m., Dec. 24; the Louisville Boar's Head and Yule Log Festival, 5 and 8 p.m., Dec. 29 & 30, and 6:30 p.m., Dec. 31. 12.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 87
