design & Architecture THE PIPES AND THE PLAYERS One thing we learned in researching this story was that each pipe organ is as unique as the person who plays it. We asked a few of Louisville's fnest to describe these glorious and complicated instruments as if they were talking about a dear friend. Dr. Paul Weber Director of music, organist St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church 639 S. Shelby St. About Weber: "When I was growing up in Wisconsin, my ffth-grade music teacher took our class to a local Lutheran church, where we climbed into the balcony for a demonstration by the organist. She played Bach's socalled 'Little Fugue in G minor' and I was hooked. The colors, the power of the instrument — it was love at frst hearing." Weber in the "bowels" of St. Martin's pipe organ. About the organ: "The organ at St. Martin's is a rare gem of an instrument. It is diffcult to fnd a 120-year-old organ in its original condition and location. On top of that, to have a true Romantic organ, built just a few years before Brahms died, of such fullness, warmth and color in an excellent room is truly remarkable. By 1991 it was in need of serious work just to get the instrument playing. Now we have an organ that, while still in need of some restoration, is a living connection to a brilliant musical culture from the past and is a treasured voice in Louisville's cultural life today." Holiday concert schedule: Holiday Choral Festival featuring the American Spiritual Ensemble, Louisville Chamber Choir, U of L Cardinal Singers, Louisville Youth Choir's Descant Choir and Paul Weber, 7 p.m., Dec. 8; choral Mass with organ, 4 p.m., Dec. 24; carols, choir and organ concert, 11 p.m., Dec. 24; "Schubert Mass in G" with organ and orchestra, noon, Dec. 25. 86 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.13
