Jerry Eaves (1978-'82) Charles Jones (1980-'84) A product of Ballard High School, Jerry Eaves joined fellow freshmen Scooter McCray, Wiley Brown and Derek Smith, along with juniors Darrell Griffth and Bobby Turner and senior Larry Williams, on the talent-laden 1978-'79 team. Sidney Moncrief and Arkansas wrecked that season in the regionals, but Eaves' herky-jerky stability helped win it all the next year. Lest we forget, it was Eaves who raced the length of the foor to mess up UCLA star Kiki Vandeweghe's easy layup late in the fnal, then hit two quick shots to tie the game. He played four years in the NBA before coaching under U of L legend Butch Beard at both Howard University and the NBA's New Jersey Nets and under Denny Crum at Louisville from 1996 to '99. He head-coached at North Carolina AT&T; for nine seasons until 2012 and lives in Greensboro, N.C. Recruited from tiny Scooba, Miss., the same year that guard Lancaster Gordon signed on from Jackson, Miss., Charles Jones was surrounded by frst-championship mainstays (Smith, the McCray brothers, Brown) and second-championship heroes (Milt Wagner, Gordon, Billy Thompson, Jeff Hall) during his college career. His teams fnished a collective 100-34, with two Final Four and two regional appearances. A smallish center at 6-foot-8, he was an elevator man — surpassed by only Pervis Ellison and Gorgui Dieng in career blocked shots — and rejected 10 shots in one game. As quick as any forward, he also amassed 160 steals in his four years. Jones played for four seasons in the NBA and two more in Italy before retiring from the game. He's now an offcer in the Louisville Metro Police Department. 12.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 37
