Songs for the Lesser Sung
By Jack Welch
I landed in Louisville (via Boston) in September 1979 — just in time to
follow Darrell Griffth and company through the Cards' frst NCAA
championship season. Since then, I've seen the ebbs and (mostly)
fows of 33 years of squads, developing respect and affection
for the players who've packed the career record books as well
as those who haven't. Here are some memorable moments and
where-they-are-now briefs of a dozen of the latter, who were more
likely to play abroad or in the Development League than in the
NBA after leaving U of L. Some are coaches and some are still running the foor, but they all meant a ton to their teams. My apologies
for skipping over the Jerome Harmons, Brandon Benders, Carlos
Hurts and Derrick Caracters brought in by Denny Crum and Rick
Pitino; their contributions were just too short-lived.
