food & THETASTING MENU drink WHAT'S NEW ON THE RESTAURANT FRONT By Zach Everson, editor of Eater Louisville Ask the Bartender Gayle Whalbering, 34, tends bar at Majid's in St. Matthews (3930 Chenoweth Square). Best night of the week there? "Thursdays," she says. "Tanita Gaines sings, and the room just lights up with her voice." Whalbering says the Bond Girl (vodka, gin, orange blossom water, lime) "is not too sweet, not too biting." What's the best tip you've received? "$150 on a semi-busy night. I felt recognized for something I love doing. This is what I've done for 15 years; this is my calling." What's the best way to get your attention when the place is packed? "Eye contact." WHAT WE'RE EATING NOW Jamaican jerk chicken wings at Cumberland Brews. The Middletown pizza. That's Italian fennel sausage, pepperoni and mushrooms — at Coals. Mongolian pot soup at Cafe Mimosa. Truffe-Parm French fries at Sidebar. Sources say, "Heaven!" After a slow summer for restaurant openings (sorry, KFC Eleven), Louisville's about to be treated to four big ones: Months in the works, La Gran Calabaza El Camino will start serving Mexican street food and craft tiki drinks in the old Avalon spot on Bardstown Road any day now. Jackknife Cafe will join food purveyors Bourbon Barrel Foods and Cellar Door Chocolates at Butchertown Market when it launches sandwich, soup and salad service. Named after an old-school lunch pail, downtown's Atlantic No. 5 will feature fve sandwiches and fve salads, plus breakfast items, pastries and rotisserie goods. Also, expect the Louisville debut of house-bottled cocktails (perfect for smuggling back to your ofce). Opening at the old Show-n-Tell strip club (don't pretend you don't know where that is), Meta is bringing classic cocktails with a modern twist downtown. One of the coowners was a founder of Meat, which may explain the similar concept. And name. Speaking of Meat, the temporarily shuttered Butchertown cocktail bar above the Blind Pig.... Meat owner Peyton Ray says it'd be premature to discuss reopening until the Blind Pig's liquor license issue is resolved. Pushed back for a second time, the Pig's ABC hearing isn't until Sept. 30. (Te restaurant remains open and pouring, though, as it keeps reminding people in advertisements.) So don't plan to meet at Meat in the immediate future. Lady flet mignon from Pat's Steakhouse. The restaurant has been in business since 1958, but that dinner with the buttery lima beans and creamed caulifower never gets old. JCTC instructor and Food Network Star champ Damaris Phillips' show is rumored to be shooting in Louisville and airing on Sundays at 10:30 a.m., starting Oct. 27. Track and Field wrap at Zanzabar. Filling! Best bar food in town. Not opening soon: Baxter Station. After being shuttered by the Department of Health and Wellness for three days and the revenue department indefnitely ($95,859.02 in unpaid taxes, penalties and interest), owner Andrew Hutto has put the 22-year-old restaurant up for sale. It's $550,000 turn-key, in case you're in the market. Chai tea latte at Red Hot Roasters. Drinks like a dessert! Forty-eight hour beef short ribs at Marketplace Restaurant. Fall. Off. The. Bone. Tiramisu and chocolate gelato (better together!) at the Gilberto Gelato stand at World Fest. Jack's nachos at Jack's Lounge. Nibbles: Te state also closed the Seafood Connection at Chenoweth Square, not letting it of the hook for $37,039.68 in unpaid taxes. . . . Food trucks' drive for the health department to grade them like brick-and-mortar restaurants appears stuck in neutral, but inching forward. . . . For those restaurants that do get graded, the scores are now posted on Yelp. . . . Writing in this style makes me feel like . . . Larry King. One last cup of vanilla ice cream with cookie dough from Dairy Kastle before closing for the season. Keep up to date with Louisville's restaurant and nightlife news at louisville.eater.com. The prosciutto-wrapped pork chop in a red-beet reduction sauce at Bourbons Bistro.  Percocet with a Celebrex chaser. (An unfortunate post-surgery cocktail ….) 72 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 10.13
