Gaela Erwin Gaela Erwin, 62 Favorite medium: pastel gaelaerwinart.com An accomplished painter, Erwin's portraits of her family call to mind Andrew Wyeth's "Helga" paintings in that she captures stillness full of emotion. My style: "Figurative realism." My infuence: "Caravaggio." My favorite tool: "My bare hands." My Louisville Magazine cover: "A portrait of a notable or a horse." My other life: "Be an art historian." My frst work of art: "A self-portrait on a grocery bag with crayons." My work says: "I leave that to the viewer, though as a feminist I feel it is important to celebrate women of an advanced age. I am annoyed with the lack of representations of older women in art. Old men, we have plenty of." My studio time: "When I am not teaching (as an artist-in-residence at St. Francis High School), 20 hours a week max." My inspiration: "Traveling to the great museums of Europe has always been my main source of inspiration and education. The discomfort of travel heightens my awareness in looking at art." My city: "The moderate standard of living in Louisville allows me to work the least amount of time to make money, which maximizes my studio time. I don't feel as though I have to compromise my work to enhance sales." From top: "Winter Mother"; "Sleeping Mother and Phanny"; "My Mother, My Sister: Back to Back" (all pastel on paper). 10.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 47
