Gibbs H. Rounsavall, 37 Favorite medium: enamel gibbsrounsavall.com We could roll around in Rounsavall's pieces for hours. They are mesmerizing — almost like a hypnotist's wheel. Describe your style. "Bold, graphic, vibrant." Finish this sentence: If I weren't an artist, I'd … "be a naturalist. I've always been fascinated by the beauty and effciency of design found in the natural world, and biomimicry has played a major role infuencing the design elements of my work." What is the frst piece of art you remember creating? "I started out making my own comics and comic book characters when I was little. I created a character called Dadman, which was inspired by my own dad. He still laughs when we bring that character up, so I guess it was an effective piece of art." How much time do you spend in the studio each week? "I teach visual art at Fairdale High School and have a two-year-old, so my time in the studio has defnitely been abbreviated. On average I try to get in about 20 hours a week." Gibbs H. Roun s avall How and where do you get inspired? "I've never lacked for inspiration. The process has always been the fuel that drives my practice. (American painter and photographer) Chuck Close said it best: 'Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work.' " From top: "June Rose"; "New Traditional"; "When We Finally Meet" (emamel).
