S hohei Katayama Shohei Katayama, 25 Favorite medium: magnets shoheikatayama.com Katayama uses physics and metaphysics in his work. His pieces are like Rorschach tests. Style: "Contemporary, conceptual, kinetic and a little bit of street." Artistic infuence: "Michio Kaku, a theoretical physicist." Tool: "Spring-loaded needle pliers, hot glue." Louisville Magazine cover: "A drawing of forest vines and trees slowly gradating into gears and engines — steampunk-style." If I weren't an artist: "I'd be ruler of the world." First art: "I melted two Warhammer plastic fgurines into one form using a soldering tool and hot glue back in elementary school." Interpretation of my work: "I'd like my pieces to be narratives of contemporary issues of ecology and spirituality: the increase of natural disasters and pollution, the demand for alternative energy, the gradual collapse and rebirth of communities, and the steady emergence of highly individualized identities." Studio time per week: "Thirty-plus hours, but it depends on priorities." Inspiration: "Trail-walking at Cherokee Park or Jefferson Memorial Forest is my escape from urban duties. Traveling back to Japan and investing time into relearning my roots and culture inspires me greatly." Louisville: "The open spaces, meadows and fatlands. It provides an ideal environment for large-scale sculptures. I also enjoy Louisville's balance of rural and urban qualities — it's not as stressful as a metropolis but still developed enough to bring in and spread out new ideas." From top: "Proximity" (solar-powered mixed media); "Tension" (magnetic mixed media); "Balance" (motor, neodymium magnets, iron shavings); "Eggoon" (steel, plastic). 10.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 45
