Your biggest artistic infuence? "John Coltrane's music." What is your favorite tool to work with? "My index fnger (works better than any brush or eraser)." We've asked you to design a cover for Louisville Magazine that sums up the feel of the city. What would you do? "Large cement-and-smog Godzilla-esque monster rising out of the river from the east heading straight for downtown, where a 50-foot Muhammad Ali is preparing to battle it. As you look down at Ali's feet you notice he is being helped along by thousands of people. There are people on the rooftops and on the bridges and in the streets ready to tussle." What is it you are trying to say with your work? "How do we know if the study for the completed thing is not the thing itself?" Is there something about Louisville that you especially appreciate as an artist? "The community supports the arts and is receptive to newer modes of thinking." How and where do you get inspired? "I look for the little daily things that might fall through the cracks. I have been watching spiders a lot lately, looking at where they put their webs and considering the why's." Oil on canvas painting of Mrs. Daisy Reddix of Jackson, Miss. "She was 100 when I painted this. She was originally from Jamaica and immigrated to the U.S. in 1919. She passed away in Jackson in 2006 at the age of 106." This piece is: "It almost will never be you." (pencil and Ohio River water on paper). 10.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 27
