bit the FLASH BACK Louisville Magazine Vol. 14 /No. 10 October 1963 On the cover: A gritty, black-and-white aerial of the Ohio River running between Louisville and New Albany, Ind., to illustrate the "friendly rivalry" between the two cities. See, competition between Hoosiers and Louisvillians isn't a new thing. Oh, and the magazine cost 50 cents. Inside: We looked back at the growth and struggle of New Albany on its 150th anniversary. The Sherman Minton Bridge, um, bridged the gap (excuse the pun) between the Indiana town and Louisville. Outside: In popular culture, Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds hit theaters in March, the same month the Beatles released their debut album, Please Please Me. Later that same year, the group put out album two, titled With the Beatles. What happened to the band after that is anybody's guess. In August, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech. By late November, president John F. Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas. A year before that, though, JFK made a trip to Louisville (see page 62). HAIKU REVIEW A burger a day* For thirty-one days, and Moss Gains no pounds. Hate him. (*Actually, more! See page 56.) 18 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 10.13 Marguerite "Margue" Esrock 21Q's 21 questions Esrock, 47, is the director of St. James Court Art Show, the 57th edition of which takes place Oct. 4-6. All-time favorite Derby winner? "Giacomo! I bet this horse because of the Grateful Dead song 'Iko, Iko' — 'Iko iko un day / Jockomo feeno ah na nay.' My husband thought I was crazy, but the longshot won." Derby or Oaks? "I have to say Derby. But I'm thinking the Thursday before Oaks is ranking really high in my book." Best book you've read over the past year? "The Cornbread Mafa: A Homegrown Syndicate's Code of Silence and the Biggest Marijuana Bust in American History, by James Higdon.
