He returned to his hometown in 1996 as a pain-medicine specialist. He's also president of the Greater Louisville Medical Society.    • "I'm a pain doctor, but all of those other paths have led to this and have made me who I am." • "Louisville, and Kentucky in general, has a lot of chronic illness. A lot of it has to do with, frst, access to care, because in pain management it's not always covered like other things would be and sometimes people have a hard time geting access. Secondly, the health of our population is not what it should be.  We have a lot of obesity, a lot of cigarete smoking, a lot of heart disease, and a lot of diabetes. And, thirdly, the prescription drug abuse problem. Kentucky is kind of a focal point in terms of that activity. We have a program set up through Greater Louisville Medical Society to train doctors to prescribe appropriately."   • "Everybody talks about addiction being a big problem with these pain medications. And it is.  But if patients are properly monitored and screened, the risk of developing an addiction is extremely low. It's so much easier to address this problem frsthand than let an addiction develop and try treating that later on."
