Special Advertising Section Training Helps Caregiver Cope Ande Olson is living the heartbreak of Alzheimer's disease. Her 86-year-old mother, who holds two master's degrees, is struggling to understand the basics of daily living. In addition, the disease has caused her mom to become, at times, paranoid and suspicious of her daughter's intentions. In spite of the challenges, the 62-yearold Olson, a full-time speech pathologist, is committed to help her mother stay at home for as long as possible. She has the daily assistance of a Home Instead CAREGiver, and now she has new tools that help her better understand the many facets of this disease. Olson has completed the new free Alzheimer's Disease or Other Dementias CARE Family Caregiver Training. "I needed to learn more of what to expect as Alzheimer's progresses, and I needed to network with people who understand how diffcult a caregiver's role is and what a toll this disease takes on everyone," she said. One beneft of the training is that Olson learned she could communicate more effectively at times with her mom by relying on visual cues. When her mother became confused about her daily schedule, Olson bought a large calendar on which she wrote her mother's daily plan, sometimes using pictures to clarify information. "My mother's anxiety decreased when she could see what was to happen each day, and review it often. The Home Instead Senior care training helped me anticipate the way my mother might react in a variety of situations, and to better understand that what she was doing was normal for her. It helped me respond to my mother with more patience and understanding."
