bit A CLOSER Mark Barone, 53 "An Act of Dog" portraits Barone plans to paint 5,500 portraits of dogs killed in shelters across the country. Each portrait includes the kill date. Why 5,500? That's the average number of dogs killed at shelters in a day. So far he's painted 3,500 portraits of the dogs when they were still alive. "The idea was to put faces with these animals so that people could walk in and be overwhelmed by the reality of what is going on. We want to set up a museum memorial. When it's completed, there will be 5,000 portraits stacked 10 feet tall and stretching the length of two football felds." Heart of Art Glassblowers, a guitar maker, painters. We never realized how many folks (about 150) keep studios at the Mellwood Arts and Entertainment Center (1860 Mellwood Ave.) until we ventured inside during a recent F.A.T. Friday Trolley Hop, which takes place the last Friday of each month. Here are three of our favorites. — Photos and text by Olivia Harlow Cathy Wade Ridge, 59 Quirky skirts Wade started by making fringe skirts from cashmere sweaters. Of late, she's been into "cowboy skirts" made from old textiles, including a 1960s-era fabric called "chicken scratch." "I get 90 percent of my fabric off eBay. It's all vintage. I want to keep recycling; I don't like to waste things." Matthew Cummings, 30 Pretentious beer glasses A Friday-afternoon beer club in the courtyard at Mellwood led to club glasses. Cummings also designs "pretentious bourbon glasses." "I started paying attention to beer glasses, and the designs haven't really changed. Designers haven't really addressed them, so I wanted to take it on as a challenge." 28 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.13
