arts the ? one A new show from 26-year-old New Albany sculptor W.G. Rickel, at Flame Run (815 W. Market St.) Aug. 2 to Sept. 28, will feature his glassblowing-slashmetalworking pieces that examine our connection to technology. "Drilling the glass and bending the metal, there is so much chaos in it," Rickel says. "The violence of the process — I like to let that show in the work." He says his infuences vary, from the Mid-Century Modern style to Nikola Tesla, best known for his work with alternating-current electricity. "Early technology is more exciting than fnding something with its circuitry hidden," Rickel says. "Modern technology is so far removed from the human element; I want to leave in the human element." — Sara Price Transmission Anomaly and Binary Cell by W.G. Rickel. QUESTION ¯ When did you start creating art? "I used to make my own toys as a kid. My dad had a woodshop, and I was really into science-fction-type stuff. He would let me have at it, using whatever cool parts I could fnd to make robots. That's the way I see all of my art. My sculptures aren't toys anymore, but they do the same thing for me. I'm interested in the combination of lots of different materials." www.nextlouisville.com 14 4 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.13
