style & Pretty Gritty Louisville's Street Style Blog fashion Forecastle Flair There's always a certain easing-in period with large music festivals to fgure out the lay of the land. The locations of those things necessary for survival — food, water, shelter from the sun — are noted and referenced for later visits. Stage names are memorized. ("Which is Boom? Where is Mast? Why are we sailing?") Plans are made for how to fnd friends. ("Meet me at the glowing pink famingo.") All these initial needs may be the same across the crowd, but dressing for a festival is anything but assimilation. At frst glance, overwhelmed eyes notice an onslaught of summer trends: high-waisted cut-off jean shorts, fower headbands and crop tops. But below the surface of fads, distinguishing details stand out. Body glitter, shoes of all shapes and colors, backpacks, bracelets, sunglasses … everything gets turned up a notch, and anything you ordinarily wouldn't wear out of the house is fair game. To be ostentatious is to be applauded, but perhaps we're only mimicking those we go to see. (Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, for instance, has never been considered a wallfower.) Forecastle makes the world a stage for your inner rock star. It's a freeing feeling, letting your fower-dotted hair hang loose, taking in the music, basking in the sunsets on the river bank for three special days each summer. Here's a look back at the fashion of Forecastle, held July 12-14 at Waterfront Park. — Amber Garvey Shot by Amber Garvey, Alan Miller, Casey Chalmers.
