The "Risen Jesus" crucifx behind the altar is from the original St. Michael Church that opened in 1980. The oculus dei at the top of the church allows light to enter and spread across the altar while continuing the architects' circular design. One of the colorful clerestory windows that encircle St. Michael. The church's stained glass was blown by Louisville artist Kenneth vonRoenn. Font of Wisdom "St. Michael's Church representatives came to me for their new baptismal font knowing they wanted the artwork to refect the woods that surround the church, which they even incorporated into their logo with a tree," says sculptor/ blacksmith Craig Kaviar of Kaviar Forge and Gallery in Clifton. "The building committee for St. Michael's was a diverse group with many opinions. It took approximately 15 drawings and multiple meetings before we agreed on the fnal design. I enjoy working with groups; it has been my experience that by sharing ideas and perspectives a far greater work of art is possible. It does not need to be a choice between satisfying the customer and creating good art. "I forged the baptismal font in copper with a method similar to that used to create the Statue of Liberty. A stainless-steel structure hidden on the inside supports the weight of the water cascading from the copper bowl, which is held up by a forged copper tree that appears to grow from a boulder at the base. In keeping with the church's emphatic celebration of the natural world, the boulder used was found at the site of the church's construction." — JLC 8.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 137
