Tony BoomBozz Neighborhood Bar Maier's Twice Told Books shop near the corner of Bardstown Road and Bonnycastle Avenue in the Highlands was practically a second home to bibliophiles. And it was greatly mourned when the place shut its doors in 2006. But Maier, 71, is still selling books — the real, ink-on-paper, musty, yellowingpages kind — by slowly emptying his personal Amazon-esque inventory at the Flea Off Market downtown and a summer-months market in Seneca Park (when the weather is nice). Yes, he still sells under the Twice Told name. And, no, he won't run out of books anytime soon. He has a basement, and several garages, stocked with them. You won't find better deals in the city. Or a nicer, more knowledgeable dealmaker. What book remains your great white whale? "No white whales. However, I have had many valuable books that I have held on to for a while before passing to someone else. I have seen first editions of The Catcher in the Rye, as well as signed Hemingway and Faulkner books." Can you tell somebody's personality based on the books they buy? "I can but I don't like to. Generalizations can be made as to religion, political beliefs and where the person may be from. If you are dating someone, the best way to get a quick idea of their personality is to look at their library." What book(s) do you have that you'd never sell? "The Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell. I reread this series often. I can randomly pick up any of the four books, open anywhere, and begin reading." Look, foodies, there's Earth Fare. Commercial cliché? Yup. But don't talk smack. If malls ain't all that, how come the lot's packed? Scented candle for mom? A nice basket or rug? Maybe dad deserves just the right mug. Go ahead, boutiquers, run hither and yon, We'll park at the Summit and hit Bed Bath and Beyond. — Kane Webb 7.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 47
