Readers' choice Best Trivia Night Saints 131 Breckenridge Lane "I'm very jet-lagged. Don't expect right answers out of me," says a trivia team representative as she grabs supplies (pencils, answer sheets, a category sheet that doubles as scratch paper). "I just flew in from Dubai — 24 hours — but I couldn't miss trivia night!" That's because this isn't just any trivia night; this is Bob and Marty's trivia night. Bob Murphy, a retired middle school English and history teacher, and Marty Favorite, retired from General Electric, have been coming up with humdingers to quiz crowds for years, the last couple at Saints in St. Matthews on Monday and Tuesday evenings at 6:30. Murphy handles the questions and Favorite plays songs from the '50s and '60s while trivia teams put heads together to come up with, for example, the common household name for sodium bicarbonate (1). Murphy describes the level of difficulty as "further education" and not so much pop culture. Other stumpers: In 1975, "Rhinestone Cowboy" became the biggest hit for what singer (2)? The Ganges River flows into what body of water (3)? Who was the American spy shot down by the Russians in 1963 (4)? And a "Greater Louisville" category might include a question such as: What sits between Third and Fourth streets, facing York (5)? Team names include Retirees and Wannabes, A Rooster in the Henhouse, and No Guts, No Glory. All agree that Murphy's Outlaws win more than any other team, but week to week it's anybody's game. One team, G-Men, has loyally followed Murphy and Favorite from spot to spot as restaurants have moved or closed. Other than the intellectual stimulation that Saints supplies the trivia junkies, what else is in it for these folks? The winning team receives a $25 gift card to . . . Saints! Ya know, an extra incentive to file in next week for another round of drinks, eats and battle of the noggins. 1. Baking soda 2. Glen Campbell 3. Bay of Bengal 4. Francis Gary Powers 5.
