bit the Hidden Gems The most peaceful, secluded spot in Louisville can be found at the southern end of a 1,000-yard ravine that splits Cave Hill Cemetery's old and new sections, where the spring-fed water of two shaded ponds — one emptying via a short drop into the other — begins a gradual descent to the graveyard's main lake and then Beargrass Creek. You want to talk about a perfectly air-conditioned space? This is it. With so few outdoor public www.eyecareinstitute.com pools in Louisville (sorry, splash parks don't cut it on a sweltering July day), the Clarksville Family Aquatic Center over the river is a true gem. For just fve bucks anyone can take a dip in the clean, L-shaped pool that includes water slides and a lap lane. Louisville is home to plenty of elegant Catholic churches. Only one holds skeletons and vials of ancient blood. Creepy? Sorta. Cool? Defnitely. At the side altars of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church on Shelby and Gray streets lie the remains of two Christian martyrs — Saints Bonosa and Magnus, who were killed by Roman Emperor Severus in 207 A.D.  You can see them any time of day. The church is open 24 hours. Architecture buffs will want to check out the Rainbow Apartments building at 30th and Main streets, noted for its homemade brick studded with colored-glass shards. You've probably heard about the Rathskeller, a German word for a tavern below street level, in the Seelbach Hotel, but have you been there? You'll fnd the foors, columns and walls of the underground room (built c. 1907) are made of pottery and the ceiling crafted of fne-tooled leather. Cool place to see. Cool place to sit on a scorching summer day. If you follow the Beargrass Creek Greenway www.old502.com 30 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 7.13 behind the pumping station at the corner of Brownsboro Road and Story Avenue, you'll see a small limestone-block structure beside the creek. That's the point where, before the cut-off channel was dug, the iconic creek took a severe left turn and emptied into the Ohio between Third and Fourth streets downtown.
