bit the z betting window What are the odds you'll like these July happenings? 1:1 ODDS-ON FAVORITE Upside: This six-member group is quickly becoming Downside: Could be the show of the summer. And our favorite band that plays regularly in town, including for free July 7 at the Iroquois Amphitheater. Harmonica, mandolin, congas, bongos, wood fute, steel-string guitar. Oh, you can't dance? Listen to "Canta Mi Gente," its Latin rhythm spicy as a chili pepper. See, you can dance. Appalatin it's family-friendly. If that doesn't sell you, well, then you deserve to suffer through the flm The Lorax at the amphitheater the following night. 2:1 The Fourth of July Upside: Last year, we gave you our version of the Downside: The waterfront festival has been around "1812 Overture." This year? Our orchestral take on "The Star-Spangled Banner": "[Snare drum, horns] Bum-ba-bum-bum-bum-bum [crashing cymbals]." At Waterfront Park, on July 3 and 4, there'll be free music (Kool and the Gang!) and freworks. Oh, that doesn't sound fun, Benedict Arnold? for 15 years. It hasn't been making money, though, so this year may be the event's last. Which means no more of our patriotic songs in print. 5:1 H&M;!!!!!!!!! Upside: Coming to Oxmoor Center! The 27,000 Downside: It is just a clothing store. More upside: But it's H&M;!!!! It's coming to square feet should be open for the Christmas season. Better get in line now. Whoooooo! 6:1 Poor man's Forecastle ?:1 The Eagles 9:1 New zebra name Upside: From 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. on July 6, Louisville! First Trader Joe's, now this? Can you believe it?! Downside: We prefer the name "Pourcastle." Apocalypse Brew Works is hosting a dozen performers in its parking lot off Mellwood Avenue. Five bucks to get in, which makes it an affordable alternative to Forecastle, taking place the following weekend. The brewery is calling it Poorcastle. Downside: The Dude doesn't abide. Upside: Or does he? (See page 28.) Upside: By the time you read this, Louisville Zoo Downside: We'd prefer to name the zebra Bill visitors will have voted on what to name the female baby zebra born in January. According to a press release (not making this up): The zoo narrowed nearly 5,000 submissions down to the names Abby and Ziva (both after NCIS characters, because the zebra's father, Gibbs, has the name of an NCIS character) and Katniss, a name that needs no explanation thanks to Jennifer Lawrence. Engvall, after the TBS sitcom that gave J-Law her start. (at the Yum! July 6) LONGSHOT — Josh Moss 20 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 7.13
