Or, in the case of Norton Commons, the "new urban" development near the county line, is still going up overnight. But large swaths of the East End, especially those near the river, lay claim to a rich history. The area of Harrods Creek, for example, has attracted a diverse group of people since the 1800s — from working-class white folks to black descendants of slaves to the likes of Brown-Forman founder George Garvin Brown, who bought and developed 100 acres of farmland off Wolf Pen Branch into the Nitta Yuma district. And Glenview, with its bluffs overlooking the Ohio River, luring some of Louisville's more prominent names (Bingham, Ballard), is regarded as the city's frst suburb. Prospect, too, can trace its lineage back to the 1700s. The famous one-lane bridge on River Road across Harrods Creek is now two lanes. Locals still call it the "one-lane bridge." In 1956, while staying at the Prospect estate of Mark Ethridge, publisher of the Courier-Journal and Louisville Times, on the frst Saturday in May, author John Steinbeck wrote "Ode to the Kentucky Derby." Standard Country Club, located just south of Brownsboro Road in Goose Creek, dates back 140 years. The golf club was founded by Jews, who weren't welcome in other local clubs.
