(Some called it Brunerstown, but not B-town.) Its frst institutions were four churches, two tanneries, a livery and a tailor shop. By 1902, Louisville's electric interurban line — using Bardstown and Taylorville roads — allowed it to become a commuter community for residents like Courier-Journal editor Henry Watterson. In the 1950s, the proximity of General Electric's Appliance Park sparked a substantial population increase and the 1960s addition of the Bluegrass Research and Industrial Park turned the small city into a major employer. Of 83 second- to sixth-class cities in Jefferson County, J-town is the largest in population (26,600) and acreage. Since it was developed in the 1970s, the planned community of Plainview, north of I-64, has been part of J-town's 10 square miles (even though, for mapping reasons, we put Plainview in with Lyndon/ Middletown).
