ER! ·DAY·EV BEST in ST. MATTHEWS Dude … wake it up! It's my birthday and I am keepinitsoreal in the neighborhood so saintly. The Trinity-St. X footballer was up in it ALL last night. There was tailgatin' aplenty (face-paintin' and saint-prayin') and the party made its way from Papa John's Stadium here to my favorite 'hood. I won't talk winner. Let's just say that Molly Malone's was covered in green 'til the wee hours. So "ouch goes my head." But Rainbow Blossom to the rescue with a hangover cure. At home my lovely starts my day with Cheddar Box treats, a smattering of fresh fruit from Paul's and a smidgen of Trader Joe's sundries. The day belongs to me, so I am out and about active lifestyle-ing it, keepinitsoyoung. My lovely and I hit the tennis courts at Cherokee Park. Then I meet my boys behind the Trinity football feld for a trip to the St. Matthews Batting Machines, feeling all Pete Rose without the scandal. My crew and I do Lonnie's Best Taste of Chicago for a hot dog and some inspiration in the form of the Michael Jordan pic on the wall. (Is he still playing?) We are not getting older; we're getting better. Doing it up for dinner, starting with drinks old-school, "Rat Pack"-style at Jack's Lounge. We take a corner booth and are tempted by the idea of dinner at Equus, where the smoked Gouda Hot Brown calls to me like an old friend. But we decide to take it south of the border to Havana Rumba, where I cannot refrain from the plantain. But wait. The best is yet to come. It is a full-on party at the foggy virtual-reality wonderland combat zone that is Lazer Blaze. On this tour of duty, I am the star of my very own video game, racking up enough tickets for that primo stuffed teddy bear! Like Arnold in Terminator, I will be back. We end the day at the BBC, where my mug makes its home on the wall of fame, just like my dad's did. I give a Louisville high-fve to every home skillet at the bar and accept birthday salutations a hundred times over. It really was the best day ever, and after 47 years in St. Matthews, alls I can say is you might as well live it before they dig it … and take you to Ratterman's. — Jon Lee Cope Digs Home & Garden (2001) Dandelion (2009) 3905 Chenoweth Lane // 893-3447 digshomeandgarden.com Attached to Bittners, this tiny space stocks charming garden furniture along with accoutrements for the inside of the home. 3729 Lexington Road // 899-3729 dandelionhome.com Gifts and home accessories for the quirky or sophisticated.
