1 St. James Court Fountain Nothing says late-Victorian excess quite like this bronze beauty, mounted in 1892, fve years after the great Southern Exposition ended. Photo courtesy Penny Chenery and Secretariat.com 3 Starks Building postcard Designed by architect Daniel Burnham, already renowned as the lead architect for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago and New York's Flatiron Building, the 14-story Starks Building was completed in 1913 as a U-shaped example of the Chicago School style. A 1926 eastern addition closed the U, creating a central atrium. 4 Fontaine Ferry Park entrance postcard Go ahead, call it "Fountain" Ferry — everybody else has for more than a century, even though the 60-plus riverside acres the amusement park was sited on in 1905 had belonged to early ferryman Aaron Fontaine. In its 64-year existence, the hugely popular thrill park featured four successive roller coasters: the Scenic Railway, the Racing Derby, the Velvet Racer and the breathtaking Comet, with its 90-foot drop. It also brought in musical greats from John Philip Sousa to Frank Sinatra.
