LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 2.19 81 STANDOUT 2019 W O M E N What I really do: Much of what I do, whether teaching, supervising or counseling a client, is listening to people. When I help them reflect on who they are and what they are working to accomplish, I am helping them find their way. It may lead to a different place than either of us expected, but it is a major aspect of social work, education and social justice. Never assume you know what's best without listening to those directly involved or impacted. Quote that inspires me: "When you control a man's thinking, you do not have to worry about his actions. He will find his 'proper place' and will stay in it. You do not need to send him to the back door. He will go without being told. In fact, if there is no back door, he will protest until one is made for his use. His education demands it." – Carter G. Woodson. I believe that education should be liberatory, as Paulo Freire and bell hooks have described it. People should see themselves in what they learn. They should be encouraged to challenge what is known and how it came to be. This helps them find their passion. When my students have embarked on this journey with me, they have inevitably been liberated and went on to impact the world by writing their own script. Another quote that inspires me: "You don't make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas." – Shirley Chisholm.
