bearnos.com LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 2.19 25 Apparently, delivery trucks were not in the budget of downtown Louisville tool and cutlery manufacturer W.C. Heimerdinger in 1928; mules had to do the hauling in this photo of crates packed with company-made grass shears being loaded onto boxcars for the journey north to giant retailers such as Sears, Roebuck & Co. Founded in 1861 by German-born August Heimerdinger, the "cutting-edge" enterprise is still going strong 160 years later, headed by fifth-generation president Carl Heimerdinger (see package beginning on page 54). Located since 1983 on Shelbyville Road in St. Matthews, the business — now named Heimerdinger Cutlery — stopped manufacturing its goods in the 1950s, but continues to sell and service an array of top-quality, hard-to- find knives, scissors, garden tools and barbering supplies. Need a sheep shearer? A tomato knife? A machete? A left-handed scissors? A shoe knife? This is the place. — Jack Welch A BIT OF HISTORY FROM U OF L ARCHIVES AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
