bestparksever.com louisville.com LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 1.19 29 FLASHBACK January 1994 On the cover: "Power! The City's Colossi of Clout" Inside: We profiled John Schnatter, then 31 and a decade into his pizza empire with nearly 400 Papa John's locations. "The only true happiness in life," Schnatter said, "is knowing that you're getting better." Our list of powerful people included some who remain influential today — Humana co-founder David Jones and St. Stephen Church senior pastor the Rev. Kevin Cosby — plus more transient players. Like Rick Scott, then the CEO of Louisville-based Columbia Health- care Corp., which was in the middle of merging with Hospital Corp. of America. The company was later fined $1.7 billion — the largest such fine ever — for de- frauding Medicare, Medicaid and other federal programs, and Scott was pres- sured to resign. Along with the merger, Scott took the company to Nashville and later moved to Florida, where he recent- ly served two terms as governor and in November won his race for U.S. Senate. In the profile, Scott's brother said, "He always said he'd be president of the United States, and he still might be." Outside: January 1994 Courier-Journal headlines: "Education-reform goals spark fears, fire"; "Owners of Casa Grisanti building to give it to afford- able-housing group"; "Macauley Theatre will close in May if buyer can't be found"; "Louisville airport's middle name may be International."
