102 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 10.18 THE OVERVIEW Sanag African Restaurant 5312 S. Third St. (Iroquois neighborhood) The party: Anne Marshall, senior writer Josh Moss, editor Mary Chellis Nelson, managing editor Mickie Winters, photographer The meal: No menu. Just large pictures with no words to describe the dishes. The man behind the counter said, "No, no, not that one. It's liver." We ended up ordering a few different chicken dishes. And one with goat. The meal came with four unpeeled bananas. "It's the softest chicken I've ever had." — AM "You can just take a fork to the chicken and it comes right off the bone." — JM "I'll take some of that chicken skin." — MCN "The potatoes are so soft." — JM "The rice is buttery." — MW "The green sauce is really hot. I wouldn't dump it on." — AM "These are big portions. How much was each dish?" — MW "The prices are just scribbled on a piece of cardboard at the counter. Like $10 or $12 apiece." — JM "I've never had goat." — JM "I've never had goat and it will stay that way." — MW "This goat is rich. Like tender beef." — AM "Nice flavor. Oh, there's a goat bone in my mouth." — JM "Kind of dangerous." — MCN "I am into that goat. More than I thought I'd be. The goat wins." — AM "All made by one woman in the back." — AM "You know you're in an authentic place when everyone who walks in appears to be from the country you are eating from." — AM "What we are eating and what the customer was eating when we came in are totally different. He must have ordered something off the menu." — AM "Or maybe he had the liver." — MCN
