Michael Davis 12, Kentucky School for the Blind, sixth grade Drummer extraordinaire, Michael is part of a percussion ensemble and plans to start a rock band. Who's your favorite drummer? One of the really good ones is Neil Peart from Rush. What other bands do you like? Van Halen, Kansas. When I first listened to a Kansas song — boom! — just like that. What else do you like to do? Piano. I could play a whole bunch of songs on the piano. Bee Gees, Pink Floyd. Every time I hear a song I know on the radio, I'll just start playing it. Now here's something: My dad told me they've never had a kid in the Guitar Center keyboard section jammin' out to the Bee Gees. We'll probably have to ask them next time we go. Ilse Lorena Powell 10, Martin Luther King, fifth grade Lorena's many talents include playing Quick Recall, singing and acting in school plays, and, with family from Costa Rica, she is fluent in English and Spanish. What do you want to be when you grow up? It changes by day. Some days I want to be a teacher and the next day I want to be a performer and the next day I want to be a chemist. What makes someone smart? Reading helps a lot. It doesn't matter if you're doing a math or science test, there is still going to be a question to read. What do you do outside of school? We have a farm in Henry County, so I consider myself a farm kid. It's really interesting to have a different life set from my friends at school. [68] LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 11.12
