Buy Local, Win $1,000! #hoLOUdays Contest This month's Louisville Magazine theme is the school and college guide, which got us to thinking about how young folks spend their money. They probably have an advantage over us old fogies. Most of us who are longer in the tooth saw the dawn of the big box store era in the 90's, when 'bigger is better' was the mantra for all. We all, to some degree, adopted the philosophy of "cheap underwear at any cost!" – meaning we weren't that concerned about how the prices got lowered on any given item, just that we were getting the best "deal" we could. What we didn't realize was that the 'deal' included a lot of hidden costs – less durable materials, urban sprawl, less money in our local tax coffers, less choice in what was available for us to purchase, etc. And our city started to look the same as lots of other cities. All of us – young and old - have gained a better understanding of why shifting some of our dollars to locally owned, independent businesses makes a difference in our community. And that goes for online shopping as well! LIBA's job will be finished when everyone makes their purchasing decisions from not just a consumer's view point, but also from a citizen's view point.
