louisvillecrashers.com 10 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.17 LOUISVILLE LIP House hunting The May 2017 Bit of History included an undated Louisville Home Show photo that we predicted was from the late 1920s or early '30s. It captured several kids holding intricate models of their dream homes. They stood in front of a real house that had "American Minimal Traditional written all over it." The photo was taken sometime in late 1929. Louisville residential architect Stratton Hammon designed the home, which was sponsored by the Louisville Real Estate Board and first erected at the Louisville Armory downtown (which later became Louisville Gardens). After the event, it was re-erected on Norbourne Boulevard in St. Matthews, where it still stands. See Kentucky Houses of Stratton Hammon, pages 18 and 19. John David Myles Simpsonville Born identity Jack Welch's Just Sayin' column in May was about how the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles initially denied a Goshen, Indiana, motorist's request to pay extra to have ATHE1ST imprinted on a personalized license plate. The column "A License to Nil" is an attempt to challenge the overt religiosity in Kentuckiana municipal institutions. Instead, it reveals the myopia of so many Louisville liberals regarding LGBTQ issues. Speaking about religious conservatives in the region, Welch writes, "...they're bugged to no end that two people of the same sex want to get married. They're perplexed that a boy who thinks of himself as a girl should insist on using the women's room." Transgender people are not people of one gender who "think of themselves" as another gender; they are the gender with which they identify. A transgender girl is a girl, period. The piece's attempt at liberal inclusivity instead props up the very myth about trans identity that is so instrumental to the legislation that discriminates against transgender people and contributes to the silencing and harm against trans bodies. Louisville liberals have an obligation to educate themselves about the realities of LGBTQ issues and the existential threat that their assumptions perpetuate. Matthew Arlyck Old Louisville Aloha I enjoyed reading Jenny Kiefer's article in the SWIG bar guide about her dad's days working at the Luau Room (the Hawaii-themed bar that opened near the airport in 1959 and closed in 1983). I worked there too back in those days, in the kitchen washing dishes. I remember the many fancy glasses. There was a skull mug that held cinnamon sticks. I also remember another glass with someone surfing sculpted on the side. Somehow one of those made its way home with me. Tell your dad I said hello.
