SUPERCHEFS BEST WAFFLES CC The first bite of the Triple Threat — strawberry waffles with strawberry compote and fresh strawberries — evokes memories of funnel cakes at the fair, the doughy, crispy goodness balanced with a week's worth of sugar. What's SuperChefs' secret? "Our waffles are doughnut waffles," owner/chef Darnell Ferguson says. "Deep-fried, crunchy outside, soft inside." His creativity might also have something to do with it. Other flavors include Cinnamon Toast Crunch (cinnamon-sugar waffles with caramel syrup and Cinnamon Toast Crunch flakes); Elvis (layered with peanut butter, bananas, chocolate-caramel syrup and diced can- died bacon); bourbon (bourbon-infused caramel waffles with candied pecans); and waffles with sweet-spicy chicken wings on top. And I get the gluten-free versions. "Someone that's not glu- ten-free, they still like it. They don't even know the difference," Ferguson says. "That's the key to glu- ten-free."
