Michael
Dunn
Commander
Since 2000, Michael Dunn has led the
Ohio Valley Native American Veteran
Warrior Society. The 61-year-old's title:
commander. "Today's society doesn't
have anything to help teach the youth
about being a warrior," says Dunn, a
Southern Indiana native who joined
the Marines in 1983 and fought in
Operation Desert Storm. "So we put a
group together that would do that. We
protect our elders and teach our young."
The Warrior Society's seven
members are military veterans with
Native American ancestry. Their
uniform includes a traditional Native
American tunic. The group's spiritual
leader guides them through ceremonies
at events throughout the city, including
powwows where they serve corn and
bison burgers. This month, the Warrior
Society will present the colors during an
opening flag ceremony at the Crescent
Hill Old-Fashioned Fourth of July
Festival. "The Star-Spangled Banner"
and a Native American national anthem
will play. "We uphold the history and
traditions," Dunn says.
