BARS/ NIGHTCLUBS BJ's Sports Pub 8238 Dixie Hwy. // 935-1103 This popular bar and grill features a couple dozen flat- screen televisions to watch all your favorite sports. Bone Headz Pub 7844 Dixie Hwy. // 690-3541 A sign on the door says "No Colors." Bike night (and we don't mean the kind with chains and derailleurs) is every Wednesday, with karaoke on Fridays and $1 cans of beer on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Brewskee's 5507 Valley Station Road // 933-0361 Rattlesnake shots, "Alabama Slammers," DJs, karaoke; open until 4 a.m. every night. If you're looking to party hearty, look no further. Expo Five 2900 S. Seventh Street Road // 645-1820 expofive.com This concert hall in a Quonset hut that's attached to the Derby Park Flea Market books local, regional and, occasionally, national acts, mostly in the metal and Southern-rock categories. Gilbert's 4950 Terry Road // 448-7365 Hidden in what looks like an abandoned office building, this bar and grill is surprisingly warm and roomy inside. Features eight Diamond pool tables, live music on Saturdays and karaoke on most other nights. John O'Bryan's Tavern 4123 Flintlock Drive // 449- 4940 Some say you'll find the best fish sandwich in town here. You'll also love the giant beer cans protruding from the ceiling. It's the place to be for ball games and horse races, with 360 degrees of TVs. La Esperanza Grocery 4759 Dixie Hwy. // 785-4370 A combination Latino food mart and boutique, the boutique half offers bridal dresses, fancy boots, stylish men's coats. On the food side you'll find carne picada, plantains and other south-of-the-border goods. Once Upon a Child 8176 Dixie Hwy. // 935-7878 onceuponachild.com One of four Louisville-area outlets, Once Upon a Child buys and sells "gently used" children's clothes, toys, furniture and equipment. HOME/ FURNISHINGS Bluegrass Lawn & Garden 12711 Dixie Hwy. // 933-1724 bluegrasslawnandgarden.com If you're looking for some serious yard-maintenance equipment, look no further. Bobcat, Stihl and Scag are some of the many brands carried at this shrine to the perfect lawn. Dixie Manor Shopping Center 6801 Dixie Hwy. // This updated 1950s-era shopping center houses Hobby Lobby, Starbucks, Furniture Liquidators, a YMCA branch and other tenants. Stephenson Garden Center & Duke's Landscaping 8136 Dixie Hwy. // 935-0353 A full-service garden center and nursery, Stephenson has a large selection of annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. Duke's Landscaping has been tending lawns and gardens since 1981. West Point Do It Best Lumber 13501 Dixie Hwy. // 937- 1152 westpoint.doitbest.com This locally owned store carries everything the serious do-it-yourselfer needs, including an impressive assortment of lumber. Fuji Asian Bistro 6801 Dixie Hwy. // 937-0488 fujisushiky.com Locals say there's no need to drive to the East End to get good sushi. The deep-fried Kentucky roll is a specialty. Closed for remodeling in early 2014, it's scheduled to reopen in June. Indi's Restaurant 4590 Dixie Hwy. // 447-4856 See Churchill Downs/ Iroquois. Jerry's J-Boy Restaurant 4832 Dixie Hwy. // 447-4610 One of only five remaining of a Kentucky-based chain of restaurants that was popular in the 1950s and '60s. The J-Boy hamburger still rules. Khalil's 10966 Dixie Hwy. // 632- 2227 khalilsondixie.com Located in the Valley Station Shopping Center, Khalil's serves up a "unique spin on traditional American cuisine." Which translates to pizza on a pretzel, fried pickles and deep-fried Oreos along with the usual burgers and pizza. Sandi's Kitchen 5300 Cane Run Road // 384-4823 Skillet breakfasts, classic sandwiches and country cooking is the fare at this neat-as-a-pin, checkered- tablecloth family restaurant that sits in the spacious countryside on the edge of town, hard by the smokestacks of LG&E;'s Cane Run power plant. La Carreta 10105 Dixie Hwy. // 384- 4094 Don't be fooled by the sign outside that reads "Mex-Mex Grill," it's really La Carreta. Serves a wide variety of standard Mexican fare including fried ice cream. Mike Linnig's 9308 Cane Run Road // 937-9888 mikelinnigsrestaurant.com Although many Louisvillians mispronounce its name as "Linnings" (it's really LINN- iggs), that doesn't keep them from making regular treks to this temple of fried fish. It's best on a summer day when you can sit outside at one of the picnic tables on the gravel under the shade trees.
