Steve's Bar & Grill 1670 S. 17th St. // 772-0607 Tucked away in the middle of an industrial zone, Steve's serves fried steak, chicken, wings and beer to the lunch and after-work crowd from nearby businesses. Stevie J's BBQ 1831 W. Jefferson St. // 712-1625 The sign on this little red concrete-block shack says it's "Louisville's Best BBQ." Who are we to argue? A full slab of ribs will set you back just $20. Sweet Peaches 1800 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. // 356-0232 This small cafe, catty-corner to the Kentucky African- American Heritage Center, serves sandwiches, soups and a variety of baked goods. The Table 1800 Portland Ave. // 708- 2505 tablecafe.org This popular nonprofit lunch spot specializes in locally sourced ingredients and offers pay-what-you-can pricing. Victory Lane Bar & Grill 627 N. 34th St. // 749-8237 They keep it simple: burgers, wings and barbecue. OTHER FOOD Chef Space 1812 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. // 992-9436 The former Jay's Restaurant in the Russell neighborhood has been transformed into the city's first "kitchen incubator," a space where food entrepreneurs can try out and sell their creations — and hungry customers can buy some of those creations at a front-lobby counter. Cup of Joy 2507 Bank St. // 612-5214 This new (opened in 2016) Portland nonprofit- owned shop offers coffee, sandwiches and pastries at very affordable prices. McQuixote Books & Coffee 1512 Portland Ave. // 530- 9658 This used-book store inside the Tim Faulkner Gallery also sells local coffees, teas and treats. New Roots 1800 Portland Ave. // 509- 6770 newroots.org Through its Fresh Stop Markets, this nonprofit provides access to fresh, local food to people who live in neighborhoods that offer few fresh-food options. BARS/ NIGHTCLUBS Club Cedar 416 S. 26th St. // 776-8686 This spot attracts a lively and loquacious neighborhood crowd and features a DJ on Tuesdays and every other Wednesday and Thursday. Cole's Place 2928 W. Kentucky St. // 778-4330 colesplace.com With a spacious dance floor, this bar is a popular nightspot, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, when a DJ spins and scratches. Try some of the beers on tap and take home a growler. Legends of Louisville 2523 W. Broadway // Whether it's Margarita Mondays, Throwback Thursdays or Bikini Boxing night, Legends packs them in and gets them on the dance floor. Southern Hospitality 3402 W. Broadway // Opened in May 2017 in a newly renovated space, this bar-and-grill caters to a more mature (25-and- up) neighborhood crowd. Features karaoke, lots of TVs and a basic bar-food menu. Syl's Lounge 2403 W. Broadway // 387- 6781 "The smaller the club, the bigger the party" is commonly sung on karaoke night's at Syl's Lounge. These lyrics from an old R&B; hit describe the place perfectly. Wagon Wheel Bar & Grill 1633 W. Kentucky St. // 583-0962 Tucked away among homes just a stone's throw from St. Stephen Church, this has to be one of the city's unlikeliest bar-and-grills. It's mostly used for private events, but the proprietor says all are welcome to sup on "chicken, fish, beer and wine." CLOTHING/ SHOES Broadway Fashion & Decor 1731 W.
