18 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 6.17 THE BIT HAIKU REVIEW CITY IN A SENTENCE A BIT OF HISTORY FROM U OF L ARCHIVES AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS Taken from the roof of a St. Matthews auto dealership in June 1928, this photo shows a pole-stander named Jimmy "Barberwreck" Jones challenging his staying power to garner publicity for a local boy, Clarence Nachand, who had made the roster of the big-city Louisville Colonels baseball team at Parkway Field. Jones' nickname was an obvious play on that of New York fad-starter Alvin "Shipwreck" Kelly, who the month before had thrilled Derby crowds (and drawn Courier-Journal front-page headlines) by sitting atop a flagpole on a 13-inch rubber-covered disc for days on end, with just cigarettes and coffee for energy. Jones managed to hold his perch for 57 hours and 40 minutes. By the next year, Kelly would bump up his endurance feat to 49 days while 225 feet up in the sky. LOU NEWS "I was at Ali's funeral and I saw Farrakhan there, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and I saw Bill Clinton. They all looked great, but I realized that these guys are getting old. And then I realized I'm getting old, and we're all here because Muhammad Ali is dead!" — comedian Dave Chappelle in T: The New York Times Style Magazine. Ali's funeral and memorial service were a year ago this month. To see some of the items visitors have left at his grave, turn to page 44. Won't be long until we know if the NCAA is going to strip U of L of its 2013 national title. JCPStress Superintendent? Search local, not national. Or hire the temp supe.
