144 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 4.17 ARTS WE LOVE LOOK LOOK Always welcome this time of year: a fresh perspective on the Twin Spires. Photo by Aaron Kingsbury Penny Chenery wore this floral-print dress when the horse she owned, Secretariat, won the 1973 Triple Crown. It recently sold in an online auction for $2,400. SOLD Longtime senior editor Jack Welch retired a few years ago, but he still keeps an office-as-storage-unit at the magazine for when he comes in to help with copyediting. How many wonders can one cavern hold? One of our favorite recent finds is a box of jockey trading cards from 1992. The first thing you'll notice: Many of the jockeys are still riding today. The second: The back of each card features a "favorite things" section. Back in '92, Calvin Borel's favorite ice-cream flavor was vanilla, favorite movie was Pretty Woman and favorite color was gray. Corey Nakatani watched The Simpsons and listened to "M.C. Hammer songs." Kent Desormeaux ate French food and liked Kevin Costner in No Way Out. John Velazquez answered the questions this way: "no particular favorite show," "no favorite song," "no movie stands out," "no favorite actor or actress," "no favorite sports team." His favorite color was white. The Kentucky Derby Museum awarded this colored-pencil drawing, by duPont Manual sophomore Addie Clark, the top prize out of more than 200 entries in its Horsing Around With Art competition. Addie won six Derby box seats for her piece, which will be on display at the museum for a year.
