LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.16 15 Mary Furlong Coomer Fortune Teller The crystal ball is just for show. "I never learned to scry," she says. Mary Furlong Coomer — otherwise known as Kentucky Mary — has other ways of seeing. She spreads a sequined cloth over a table at Louis's the Ton and reads impulse in my palm — a long life, love — just as she learned in college. The former English teacher (who can recite Dickinson or Eliot on cue) interprets the stars from two hemispheres, first the one that makes me twin fish — an old soul, said to have lived as every sign already, artistic, nuanced, crippled by perspective — then the one that makes me a cock (though Coomer shyly says rooster instead) — aggressive, proud, determined. Next she makes my name math, scribbles on paper, double-checks, tells me I'm a nine — creative, communicative, compassionate. Then it's time for the cards. Not tarot. "That's scary," she says. Just numbers and royals on the table, mapping me. Two jacks and I'll find love and lust in the same person. "That's good," Coomer says. "It's sad when it's only one." Kentucky Mary does $20 readings at Red Tree during the First Friday Trolley Hop, and at Louis's the Ton during the F.A.T. Friday Trolley Hop. — Dylon Jones PORTRAIT Photo by Chris Witzke
