BESTDOCS Who compiled the list of Best Doctors? Best Doctors, Inc., which was founded in 1989 by Har- vard medical school professors and is headquartered in Boston. What criteria determine the Best Doctors? Best Doctors researchers contacted physicians in the metro area who have been included on a previous Best Doctors list and asked them, "If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?" Previous lists? Best Doctors has been doing this for a while and up- dates its research — via surveys and phone calls — every other year. Is this different from the Top Docs lists the magazine has previously published? Yes, although you'll no doubt notice some familiar names on this year's list. Louisville Magazine compiles its biennial Top Docs list from a survey of the metro area's physicians. We plan to continue our Top Docs survey every other year and thought publishing a Best Doctors list in this off year would make for an interest- ing comparison.
