52 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 11.16 HA JI ABDIKADIR junior, Collegiate When Haji moved to the United States from Kenya, he was already an experienced soccer player. He's been playing at Collegiate for four years, where he has been recognized nationally and locally. After graduating early, Haji has plans to play soccer at U of L. How did you start playing soccer? "I started in my hometown in Kenya. I guess in Kenya, basically everyone played soccer, so there was no option between different sports. So I had to pick soccer. I really like it." When did you move here? "I moved when I was eight years old. I came to a refugee camp. I live with my uncle and my sister. She's my legal guardian." What's your favorite subject? "I would say English. I like reading a lot, but I like optional reading. Instead of teachers assigning you books, I like optional reading because I think it's better for my brain to process the English language. My favorite book is either The Alchemist or To Kill a Mockingbird." What's the biggest difference between Kenya and the U.S.? "In Kenya, you see everyone around outside. In the United States, you see like one or two people outside unless it's a big holiday where everyone's outside. In Kenya, it felt like it was a big holiday every single day. No one wanted to stay in their house because everyone is outside every day."
